# Why locals can’t find your business on Google (and how to check in 15 seconds)

![Why locals can’t find your business on Google (and how to check in 15 seconds)](https://imagedelivery.net/bVV3LGIKkEXotkV_Bk5iLQ/linkai-istock-local-search-near-me/public)

When locals can’t find your business on Google, the cause is almost never the quality of your work. Google can’t confidently connect what you do, where you do it, and why customers should trust you, so it shows a competitor it can verify. The same signals now decide whether Google’s AI Mode, AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT mention you at all. Below are the four gaps we see most often in Australian service businesses, what has changed in 2026, and a free check that shows which gaps are yours in about 15 seconds.

Somewhere near you, right now, someone is typing your service into Google. “Plumber near me.” “Physio Newcastle.” “Accountant open Saturday.” If your business isn’t the one they find, the job goes to whoever Google felt confident showing instead.

## Check yours first, then read the gaps

You could work through all of this by hand. It’s faster to run the check, then read the four sections below with your own result in front of you. It’s free, takes about 15 seconds, and the report separates what Google returned about your business from what your website shows, so you can see whether the problem is your profile, your site, your reviews, or the way they connect.

## Run your free local visibility check

Your website, plus the service and location you want to be found for. You will get a report that separates what Google returned from what your website suggests.

### Your top fixes

## 1. Google can’t clearly match your business to a profile

Your [Google Business Profile](https://www.linkaidigital.com.au/services/get-found) is the anchor for everything in local search. If it’s incomplete or out of date, or your name, address, phone and website don’t line up with what’s on your site and other listings, Google hedges and shows someone it can verify.

The usual culprits: an old phone number, a service area that was never set properly, vague categories, or a profile that was claimed years ago and never touched since. Google’s own [local ranking guidance](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091?hl=en-AU) names relevance, distance and prominence as what it weighs, and a thin profile loses on relevance before distance or prominence get a say.

There’s a newer culprit too. Google’s automated assistant now rings or texts businesses to confirm details, and it can update your profile from whatever it hears. In September 2026 Google made that visible: a [“Collected info” tab](https://searchengineland.com/google-business-profiles-rolls-out-collected-info-488387) in your profile dashboard shows what the assistant gathered and lets you delete anything wrong. It isn’t available in every region or category yet, so if you see the tab, read it. Details you never typed may be shaping how Google describes you.

The check looks up whether Google can connect your business name, website, phone and service area to a live local profile, and shows you exactly what it returns when it does.

## 2. Your review signals don’t stack up against the map results

Reviews feed the prominence side of that ranking guidance, and they do a second job that matters as much: they decide who gets picked. When someone searches locally, Google shows a handful of nearby businesses side by side. Rating, review count, and how recently reviews landed, all in one glance.

You don’t need hundreds. You need enough recent, consistent reviews that a customer choosing from the map has a reason to pick you. If the businesses beside you show 80 reviews and you show nine, that gap does more damage than your website ever could.

One rule before you start asking. Under the [ACCC’s guidance on online reviews](https://www.accc.gov.au/business/advertising-and-promotions/online-reviews-for-product-and-services), you can’t offer an incentive for a positive review, and any incentive you do offer has to apply whether the review is good or bad and be disclosed. The simplest way to stay on the right side of that is to ask every customer the same way and never filter who gets asked.

The check puts your rating and review count next to the nearby businesses Google is returning for your service and location, so you can see the gap in numbers rather than guessing.

## 3. Your mobile site fumbles the handover

Getting found is only half the job. When someone taps through from Maps on their phone, a slow page, or a landing page that never mentions their suburb or the service they searched for, kills the enquiry. That’s a lost job you never hear about, because it never became a phone call.

This is the gap owners are most surprised by, because the site looks fine on the desktop it was designed on. The moment that matters is a phone, on mobile data, held by a person with two other businesses open in other tabs.

The check runs your mobile page speed and tells you how well the landing page supports that tap-through moment.

## 4. AI search can’t vouch for you

This is the gap that has moved most since we first published this guide. Google’s AI Mode [launched in Australia in October 2025](https://business.google.com/en-all/think/ai-excellence/google-ai-mode-australia-marketers/), and by Google’s I/O event in May 2026 it had [passed one billion monthly users](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/search-io-2026/) worldwide. When someone asks it for a plumber or a physio, it answers with a short list of local businesses built from the same material local SEO produces: Google Business Profile data, reviews, and clear website content. ChatGPT and the other assistants draw on the same sources.

If those signals are thin or contradictory, the AI answer names someone else and you never know the recommendation went past you. The upside is there is no separate program to run. The work that wins the map pack is the work that gets you named in an AI answer, which is why we treat them as one job rather than two. More on that in [is local SEO dead?](https://www.linkaidigital.com.au/blog/is-local-seo-dead)

The check doesn’t score AI mentions directly. It shows you the profile, review and website signals those tools rely on, which is where any AI visibility problem starts.

## What to do with your result

Fix in the order the report puts in front of you, not the order that feels most urgent. In practice that usually means the profile first, because everything else is compared against it, then reviews, then the mobile handover. Fixing the profile while your reviews sit flat makes you easier to find and no easier to choose.

Most of it you can do yourself: claim and complete the profile, set the right primary category and service areas, check the Collected info tab if you have one, make your details match everywhere, and ask every customer for a review the same way. The [Google Business Profile optimisation checklist](https://www.linkaidigital.com.au/blog/google-business-profile-optimisation-checklist) walks through the profile side, and [the complete local SEO guide](https://www.linkaidigital.com.au/local-seo-guide) covers the rest.

If the report shows gaps you’d rather not fix yourself, that’s what our [local SEO and Google Business Profile management](https://www.linkaidigital.com.au/services/get-found) is for: a one-off cleanup, or [ongoing managed local marketing](https://www.linkaidigital.com.au/services/local-services-marketing) if you want it kept current rather than fixed once.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why can’t customers find my business on Google?

Usually because Google can’t confidently match your business to a complete local profile. An unverified or incomplete Google Business Profile, the wrong primary category, a service area that doesn’t cover the searcher, or details that differ between your website and your listings will all push Google toward showing a competitor it can verify instead.

### Why does my competitor show up above me?

Usually they have a more complete profile, a stronger review record, and consistent details across the web. Distance plays a part, but it isn’t the whole story. A well-maintained profile a little further away regularly outranks a neglected one that’s closer.

### How do I check whether my Google Business Profile is the problem?

Search your service plus your suburb on a phone, in an incognito window, and see what comes back. For a fuller read, run the free [local visibility check](https://www.linkaidigital.com.au/local-visibility-check). It looks up what Google returns for your business, shows the nearby businesses you’re being compared against, and separates profile problems from website problems.

### What is the “Collected info” tab in Google Business Profile?

It’s a tab Google rolled out in September 2026 that shows details its automated assistant gathered from phone or chat conversations with your business, with the source and date. You can delete anything that’s wrong or out of date. It isn’t available to every business yet, but if it appears in your dashboard it’s worth a look, because that information is used to match you with searches.

### How many Google reviews do I need?

There isn’t a magic number. The bar is set by whoever appears beside you in the map results, so the useful question is how your rating, count and recency compare to those specific businesses. A steady flow of reviews matters more than a one-off burst, and under ACCC rules you need to ask everyone consistently rather than only your happiest customers.

### Will AI tools like Google AI Mode or ChatGPT recommend my business?

They can, and they draw on the same local signals: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and clear, consistent information about what you do and where. Thin or contradictory signals are the reason an AI answer names someone else, so fixing the local basics fixes both at once.

### How long does it take to start showing up?

Once the fundamentals are fixed, improvements usually appear over weeks as Google recalculates, not overnight. Profile fixes can register within days. Review strength builds over months. Consistency is what holds the position once you have it.
