SEO earns the click
It gets your page into the list of results, then relies on the person choosing to click it over the nine others around it.
AEO, or Answer Engine Optimisation, is the practice of making a business easy for AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews to understand, trust and name when someone asks them a question.
Classic search returns a page of links and leaves the choosing to the person. An answer engine does the choosing: it reads what it can find about the businesses in a category and comes back with two or three names and a short reason for each. AEO is the work of being one of those names.
You will also see it called AI SEO, or generative engine optimisation (GEO). They describe the same job. The label mostly tells you who is selling it.
It is not a separate channel bolted onto your marketing, either. AEO runs on the same evidence that already decides local search: a complete business profile, genuine reviews, consistent details, and content that answers the question directly instead of circling it.
Also called: Answer Engine Optimisation, AI SEO, Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO).
Not "plumber Parramatta", but "who should I call for a burst pipe in Parramatta on a Sunday?". The question carries context a keyword never did, including urgency, location and constraints.
It pulls from what it can read and cross-check: business profiles, reviews, directories, your own pages, and anywhere else your business is described by someone other than you.
Identical name, address, phone, services and service areas let it treat you as one business with a clear offer. Contradictory details make it uncertain, and uncertain sources get left out rather than ranked lower.
The businesses that are legible, well-reviewed and clearly relevant get named. Everyone else is simply absent from the answer.
It gets your page into the list of results, then relies on the person choosing to click it over the nine others around it.
It gets your business named inside the answer itself, where there may be no list to rank in and no click to win.
A complete profile, genuine reviews, consistent details, and content that answers plainly. Doing those well serves both, which is why AEO is rarely a separate budget.
A page of results had room for you at position seven. An AI answer does not. It names a handful of businesses and moves on, so the gap between being included and being absent is far wider than the gap between ranking fifth and ranking eighth ever was.
It is also a change in kind, not just degree. Being named in an answer reads as a recommendation rather than a result, which is worth more per mention even though there are fewer mentions to go around.
None of this is exotic work. It is good marketing, made legible to machines, and most of the signals involved are ones you already control.
Answer Engine Optimisation. An answer engine is any tool that replies to a question directly instead of returning a list of links, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews.
In practice, yes. AEO, AI SEO and generative engine optimisation (GEO) all describe the work of getting a business surfaced and cited inside AI-generated answers. The label varies; the job does not.
SEO aims to rank your page in a list of results so someone clicks it. AEO aims to have your business named inside the answer itself, where there may be no list to rank in. They share most of the same foundations, so the two are usually done together rather than separately.
No. You can materially improve the odds by getting the signals right, but nobody controls what an AI engine says, and answers vary between tools and between two phrasings of the same question. Treat a guarantee as a warning sign.
Complete your Google Business Profile, build a steady flow of genuine reviews, make your name, address and phone identical everywhere they appear, and publish pages that answer the questions customers actually ask. Then check what the tools currently say about you.
Existing pages often work once they are restructured to answer first: the question as the heading, the answer in the opening sentence, the detail underneath. Answer engines lift self-contained passages, so a page that buries its answer in the sixth paragraph rarely gets quoted.
